Voice Cloning Consent: Why Ours Is Gated in the Code, Not Just the Checkbox

Short version: voice cloning - making a dubbed track sound like the original speaker instead of a standard voice - is a real feature, and a real legal exposure if it's done without the speaker's actual consent. Ours is gated so the clone technically cannot run until that consent exists.

Why this needs a real gate, not just a checkbox in a form

Voice cloning raises a specific risk generic AI tools tend to gloss over: cloning someone's voice without their permission can be a real legal and ethical problem, not just a hypothetical one - it's their identity, and several jurisdictions are actively legislating around voice and likeness rights as synthetic voice technology gets better. A dropdown menu that just lets anyone pick "clone this voice" with no check behind it is a liability sitting in your product, not a feature.

How the consent gate actually works

On any order that isn't using a stock synthesized voice - anywhere the dub is meant to sound like the original speaker - consent has to exist before that voice option is even usable:

• You can grant it at submission, via a checkbox at the point you order a dub.
• Or afterward, from the order page directly, if you didn't check it up front and change your mind.
• Every grant is logged with a real timestamp and the IP address it came from - not just a boolean flag with no record of when or how it was set.

The important part isn't the checkbox - checkboxes are easy to fake or route around in a UI. The actual enforcement is server-side: our staff tooling checks for a real consent record before it will let anyone select a cloned voice for an order, and rejects the request outright if that record doesn't exist. It's not "hidden in the interface," it's blocked in the code path that actually runs the clone.

What this means if you're ordering a dub

If your dub doesn't need to sound like the original speaker, none of this applies - our standard synthesized voices don't require any of it. If it does need to match the original speaker (a spokesperson, a public figure with an existing audience, a personal brand), you'll need to be able to confirm you hold the rights to that voice, or have the speaker's own consent, before we'll run the clone. We'd rather ask up front than build a feature that makes it easy to skip that question.

The option is disabled in the editor with an explanation, and the request is rejected server-side even if someone tried to bypass the interface - this isn't a front-end-only restriction.

Does this apply to every dub order?

Only orders using a cloned voice matched to the original speaker. Standard synthesized voices don't need this, since there's no real person's identity being reproduced.
